Transcription of letters

There are several handwritten letters in "The President".
From scholar Stephen Larson, North Carolina State University, we have received transcriptions of all the characters' letters that are displayed on intertitles in The President. His purpose is to provide film scholars writing about Dreyer's directorial debut with an accessible, handy guide so they can follow the story's progression more easily.

The film is only available on DVD and a small "script" font size is used for the dual-language intertitles, which are hard to read while the film is running. The font's off-white is not very pronounced on the black background. Additionally, some of the letters are displayed in old-fashioned cursive and use a calligraphic style. The shimmer and chroma noise hinder the words' legibility. The DVD's time codes are noted where each letter is displayed on the screen.
